Šivaratri je jedan od najvećih duhovnih praznika u hinduizmu. On se slavi četrnaestog dana opadajućeg meseca (Krišna pakša ili tamna polovina) u februaru ili martu. Smatra se najbitnijim danom za post . U Šiva Purani se kaže da ljudi koji poste i obožavaju Šivu na ovaj dan (i noć) iskreno i sa ljubavlju, dobijaju božansku milost Šive.Post može biti potpun, kada se ne jede ništa, čak ne pije ni voda ili blaži kada posvećenici uzimaju mleko i voće. Posti se ceo dan i noć, a tek se ujutro jede hrana koja je pripremljena i ponuđena Šivi (prasad) tokom dana i noći.Posvećenici ujutro pri ustajanju odlaze na ritualno kupanje, oblače novu garderobu i potom odlaze u Šivin hram gde rade određena nuđenja i mantre,pevaju himne u slavu Šive i mantraju OM NAMAH ŠIVAJA.
